Soil temps this morning still in the 30s. Still 2 months away from transplanting anything outside
note the cracking. No snow cover + Cold = Not good for farmers/home gardens. Just drys the soil out. Horrible. At least we got some rain the other day.
Mmmmm. Basil
Nothing blooming but some things showing budding signs. 50s next several days so its gonna feel like March finally.
It was a cold past few days. In fact we had our coldest April Max temp since 2003 not passing 35° here.
My soil temps collapsed. Back to Early-Mid March levels. 2018 was colder though
Garlic not liking the 30s and the 20s at night. I covered the greens that sprouted in the other raised bed.
Pots and a tarp. I feel better now Even though they would of been fine why risk it and why not keep them warmer?
The next morning it was 2 degrees warmer than an open area and by afternoon it was almost 50 under there. .
Ok, lets show the seedling process inside.
Basil.
Flowers and 3 corn stalks. lol
Peppers
Tomatoes
For those that haven't seen it. This is my setup. Nothing elaborate. No greenhouse. Just a metal rack with shelves in my living room kept warm with our wood stove. The shelves can be raised and lowered.
I actually ordered another 4 posts so I will be adding more height. It will allow me to start a tad earlier and give taller plants like corn more room.
That's it for this week. Nothing much happening. Cold outside still.
No till on left. Tilled on right. Was tilled 3 weeks ago.
Weeds and grass growing from the non tilled area. I always say you have to try things yourself rather than listen to someone else (including me).
Another area.. No till on left.
I always hear no till is a great way to garden but I never ever see the benefits from it.
#1 the clay soil. #2. The compaction. #3. The weeds/grass seeds still grow.
So these guys that swear by it must not have the 3 issues around anyway.
Should I let it go to see how bad it gets? Would be fun to see. I hate to pull and let them spread though
No rainfall past 7 days. Only 1/2" for entire month so far.
Sunny, Dry and warm days.
Had a couple of chilly mornings so I lit the wood stove.
But check out the soil temps 4 inches deep. 8 days in a row it's rose since the drop to low 40s.. Currently warmest of the year and warmer then past 3 years
Peppers are doing well. Next week I will transplant them into Cups
