Looking to put new Bermudagrass in the Spring - debating between Latitude 36 or Celebration, or one type in the front and another in the back.

Had a good portion of previous bermudagrass that came with the house (I'm not sure what type it was but nothing fancy) die in a shaded area. I've removed vegetation blocking sun and raised canopy that the "bad area" gets much better sunlight than before but is still partially shaded.

Which Bermudagrass is better in partial shade, Latitude 36 or Celebration? On the official marketing page, Celebration claims to be better, but anecdotally it does not seem to perform as good in the shade as it claims, although it is still much better than common bermuds or the Tifway 419 stuff. Latitude 36 is a newer variety, but anecdotally seemes to be a little better than even the Celebration. Although Latitude 36 is marketed more for cold tolerance, a local grass grower said it tolerated shade a little better than Celebration and was the most shade tolerant Bermudagrass they carried.

I'm located in Houston TX.

I'm just planning to have it mowed once a week with lawn service. They tend to mow low, about 1" or slightly above which works for Bermudagrass.

In the front yard, I'm leaning toward the Latitude 36 and like the look of it, but will consider the Celebration is it really is that much better in the shade than Latitude 36, for someone that has experience with both. Most of front gets full sun except for the one partial shaded area that used to be mostly shaded.

In the back, I'm having problems with Saint Augustine slowly overtaking my Bermudagrass lawn. The back gets full sun. Will either Latitude 36 or Celebration out compete St. Augustine? I hate St. Augustine so am fine with the Celebration there if it will out compete it and the Latitude cannot. However if the Latitude could out compete the St. A, I'd be all over it.

Aso wanted to post this on the "Lawn Forum" site, but they have not approved me as a member.

I am in NC and have had very good luck with TifTuf, a newer variety than 419. It does spread/fill in the bare spots nicely.

"Requires at least 5 hours of direct sunlight; better shade tolerance than Tifway "
