Taking it off will improve work injury lol.
Mine broke off years ago. If I have to use it once in a while I wear jeans and an old pair of snow boots.

I also use mine with flip flops and shorts, so safety is not really an area I am concerned about, lol

No. The guard on my weedwhacker has the string cutter on it. Tap on the ground to depoly some string and it hits the cutter mounted on the guard and cuts to proper length. I don't really feel it needs to be removed to do what I need it to do

However, i am guilty of using it while in shorts and sandals. I do wear eye and ear protection though.

Improve whose work efficiency? The trimmer's efficiency or the operator's efficiency?

Yes, mine is off. If you know the right way to walk with it then nothing will fly back at you. My trimmer is a left to right movement that will shoot things away from me. If I move right to left then I better be wearing a helmet

Trimmers without guards allow longer string which means you can trim faster than before.

Heck, I removed the guard that was on my circular saw! (Now, it works a lot better.) Yes, it really does.

And you can take the string thing off and add an old blade.

That should take off a toe rather nicely.
