March 7 was our first lawn cut of the year. For us, this is the true sign of spring. Our grass has started to grow but still not as fast as the clover, thistle, and other weeds.
I’ve been raking the lawn for a few weeks now. It was frozen, but not anymore. Grass doesn’t grow up here until May, but I’m trying to get a head start. Hopefully Old Man Winter is going to bed early this year.
Your area is definitely unique given where rest of the country is far ahead as reflected in the graph.
Let’s just hope global warming doesn’t accelerate too much faster or the country is going to have serious issues.
Leafing out and budding of many plants is often related to ambient temps, but animal responses like bird migration are signaled by sun/length of day....When diurnal swings of temp can often be as much as 40deg over 24hrs, how much dif do you think a change o.2deg per decade in average temps makes?....
...The unusual warmth in the upper Midwest and unusual cool temps in the SW is caused is caused by the El Nido weather pattern, not GW.....usually the low pressure centers from which clode & storm fronts eminate course generally along the US/Canada border. As the winds circulate about them, they bring cold Canadian air down to us. But during El Ninoss, the pressure centers course over the mid line of the US bringing warm southern air up....Sea temps have started to crash, so El Nino is about to go away.
In regards adaptation to a changing environment, the genetic mutations beneficial to adaptation must already be present in the population as the changes take place. There is no "time factor" involved, so worries about how fast a warming climate is occurring are not warranted.
Interesting how the map shows the West Coast warming up all the way to Canada while the East is cold to below NYC.
