Could be a cutworm, too. I have been having a fit with them.
One sure way to find out what is eating your plants is to go out at night, just before you toddle off to bed yourself, and flash a flashlight over the plants. Look under leaves, too, and under the containers. You can then decide on a 'course of treatment.'
I don't mind picking caterpillars off a plant during the day, and flinging them onto the walkway where any one of a dozen or more of the birds around will see it, and eat it. Makes me feel much better about having killed the thing. Worries me sometimes that if I resort to pesticides, then other things, like the birds, or good bugs, are subjected to the chemicals, too -- including me.
