Hi everyone. We will be spending our first summer in our new house-moved in over winter-and we found a peach tree. I don't know how to care for it or what to do-My thumb is generally black. I would love for it to flourish-is there anything you can recommend. BTW, I live on Long Island in New York. Thanks so much.
Do you know what kind of peach tree it is? I have a dwarf peach tree that is very easy to care for. I only need to trim it back every couple of years and so far, we've had plenty of peaches each year.
One year early on, the peach tree did get a disease. I took a sample of the leaves and a peach to a local garden center and they told me what it was. I then ordered organic spray to use to kill the disease and I've no problems since (knock on wood).
I would recommend that you take a sample of your leaves and see if a garden center or orchard farm can tell you what kind of tree you have. But otherwise, I would just cut it back as needed and enjoy your peaches!
Watch out for Japanese Beetles. In just a few hours, they destroyed a tree of our that was heavily-laden with fruit. I was absolutely shocked at how fast it happened, and while I usually avoid insecticides, I suited up and soaked the tree in malathion, although it was tragically too late to save the fruit.

I think it is a pretty small tree-maybe 6 feet tall. I will take a sample to a garden center.
That might be. I will still take the sample to the garden center, and show them the damage to the leaves and see what they say. The disease my tree had was called Rot (nasty sounding but not too bad) and it created more black icky stuff than holes.
You could also take a picture of the leaves and fruit and post it here or on another forum and see what responses you get. I use a local forum here in Pittsburgh that is very good. It's run by two local gardening experts who have a show on KDKA radio. Here is the link:
folks, I recently planted a peach tree in my back yard.. Beautiful looking tree about 3 feet tall. I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. the winter months are very cold. does the peach tree require special care? do I need to wrap it in cloth or enclosure in fench? So that the wind and snow will not kill it… pls advise...
The squirrels take care of all of our fruit trees!

Try putting a piece of sheet metal around the trunk but high up and long enough so they can't hurdle it.
