My neighbor has 2 large 6to 8 foot tall rose of sharons, and I noticed that my lawn is growing the rose of sharon leaves all over, pulled about 600 out tonight alone. Any was to get rid of them versus the neighbor? In dire straits in Pennsylvania!
Round-up is non selective, meaning it will kill any vegetation it comes in contact with.
But you can spot kill plants in grass and if any grass dies back, it will recover and fill back in. Just be careful and aim only at what you want to kill. If the plants are very large it may take more than one application.
If mowing doesn't kill the seedlings, you can spray them. You need to look for a chemical labeled for broadleaf contol in lawns, there are lots of them. The same chemicals that kill clover, dandelions, etc. will also kill tree seedlings. Trimec is one example, a product sold by Lesco is called 3 way selective, and there are many others. Just be sure the product you purchase is formulated for weed control in lawns. Also a liquid product that is sprayed works better than a granular prodect put down with a spreader.
I was just going to buy 7 rose of sharon for my front yard......I didnt because I am on the edge of their hardiness zone....instead bought hydrangeas. I think I am glad with that choice after reading your problem with seedlings.
elston, you made the right choice. As lovely as they are, rose of sharon is a big pain in the neck. I finally dug up all of mine out and in its place put up a fence with clematis, passion flower vines and ginger lilies growing in front of it.
I love Rose of Sharon. Have always had them. Have 7 right now. Mine are all from the stock my g/mother had on her property, and my family has been propagating them since she died in 1976. I have never had a problem w/ them at all, and have grown them in five locations in NC and in Kansas, as well. Maybe it is the type of Althea I have ???
Also, I have mulch under and around my trees, so maybe the seeds fall on the mulch and so do not root. I have no clue. But until I came here to Charlotte, I have never heard of anyone having problems w/ Altheas sprouting all over the place!!! I really do wonder if the old fashioned ones are different . . . ?????

I love plants that have history within a family.......there was an article in the local paper about a family that all shared Catalpa trees, grown from an original tree the grandmother had in her yard.....now it is in all the decendents'yards. They all have and treasure that tree.
