For those who have wanted to give Ancestry a try but didn't want to spend the $$$, they are offering 50% off on a 6-month US subscription and 30% on a 6-month World subscription. Offer ends at midnight tonight, 9/11/2017. Become a Member
I did the $99 World on Saturday and now all I do is this genealogy stuff. So far have not found anything I didn't already know, but there is alot to see. My eyes are going buggy.
Just one tip, I think this works all the time since it's worked for me. So far I have always seen a 50% off a 6 month US sub if you've DNA tested with them. If I let my sub lapse, then hop onto your DNA matches, try to view someone's tree from those matches and it will pop up a %50 off US 6 month sub. Just did it for the third time last month.
I use the Canadian site. Every few months I subscribe and pay for one month. I cancel the monthly subscription after a couple of days to avoid auto renew. I still get the full month I paid for.
However, the last couple of times I've tried to cancel (once earlier this year and once a year before that), the site offered an alternative instead - continue for another 3 months at a very attractive price. Once I accepted the offer and delayed cancelling. The second time, I wasn't interested and just cancelled.
By the way I'm a member of Ebates (Canada). I always purchase my monthly Ancestry subscription through Ebates and receive a 12.5% rebate on what I pay to Ancestry. I don't know if Ebates U.S. offers the same rebate.

Interesting, thanks. How long after your subscription ended before you received these pop-up?

Immediately I believe. I did it once or twice and forgot how I stumbled onto it... then a month ago my sub ended and for the life of me couldn't figure out how I got the discount. I let my sub drop out and I think the same day or next day was looking at my DNA matched, clicked view tree and it popped it up.
So my guess is immediately after your sub ends that it always does this, but YMMV.
I am interested in genealogy but I don't know where to even begin. I am a 1st generation American. My family is from Latin America and Europe. Where do I start?

Start with what you know and work your way backwards generation by generation.
Interview relatives and write down what they can tell you about your family.
Another site with many genealogical databases is www.ancestry.com
It is a subscription site, but is available for free in many public libraries on their computers.
Genealogy is fascinating, but no one finds all the answers quickly.
Good luck!
