I am wondering if anyone knows how I can get some voluntary help doing some library research in Suffolk County, Long Island?
I am looking for white pages info from 1960/61. I need the names of the renters (my relatives) at a specific address at the time. I figure a white pages search would be the best place to go first.... ?
I assume you know the name of the town on Long Island.
If you only have an address and no surname you would need a "reverse directory" in which the address can be looked-up and it will show the name.
Contact the public library in the town where the address is located. Ask if they have any reverse phone directories from that time period.
If there's no reverse directory a regular phone book won't help, unless you're willing to sit and read through an entire phone book until you find the address you seek.
May I ask how you know the address and not a name? If you had a name you could search on ancestry.com where they have manifest records until at least the 1950's (maybe a bit later.) They have not only the traditional ship manifests, but also airline manifests.
The New York City Public Library is an amazing library with a very good staff. I believe it is Help page that list an email. Use it to Briefly explain the situation and ask if it is *possible* to find who lived there. You should receive a reply rather quickly. http://www.nypl.org/
You know how genealogy is though, I would be willing to search through the entire NY white pages for my relation's name... because it is my family history, and it means a lot to me. I wouldn't expect a stranger to do that for me though.
But, we'll see how far I can get with contacting the NY library!
Thank you again for your help everyone!
