If one is going by some strict notion of GENEology then that's one thing. But for me, being a person and not a racehorse or show dog, what I find most interesting is family history, not bloodlines. And non-biological relatives would certainly be part of that. Plus the nature of the relationship can easily be noted on the tree to avoid confusion among others who might reference it.
I don't give a flip about who someone chooses to include or exclude in their personal genealogy software. They could show the tooth fairy as an ancestor for all I care. It's simply not my business.
However, if there is a chance the tree is going to be posted publicly at some point, it should be accurate about what it does show even if there are exclusions or additions which some people may not agree with - after all they are free to create their own version. If a child is adopted, that should be indicated. I show cause of death where I can to alert blood relatives what to look out for health wise.
