I have today had an email from the Troy Daily to say that their first lead was a dead end, but they think that they have now tracked down the only living relatives. These are a pair of great-nephews living in St Louis,Missouri and Chillocothe,Ohio.
It appears that Irvin went by his middle name of Paul which has hampered the search. The paper has telephone numbers for both nephews and , after offering me first contact beforehand, is going to contact them. Fingers crossed this time.
Thanks again for all the warm messages and as ever I will update with any developments.
Regards
Jules
I recall a similar story involving a Canadian identity disc from the first war that was found by someone metal detecting in the UK. Turns out the soldier returned home and promptly abandoned his family by moving to the States (if I remember correctly). The wife really struggled to provide for her children.
