Telltale evidence of ancient liaisons with Neanderthals and other extinct human relatives can be found in the DNA of billions of people
Geneticist David Reich and his colleagues estimate that the DNA of living Asians and Europeans is, on average, 2.5 percent Neanderthal. The interactions probably happened across the area inhabited by Neanderthals.
The study also confirms controversial claims that the ancestors of all living Eurasians interbred with the Neandertals, while past Asians/Oceanians also mated with the mysterious ancient humans from Denisova cave[s] in Siberia," comments Darren from UNSW. "This is clear and independent validation of DNA work on both these extinct humans [the Neanderthals and the Denisovans], confirming today's other big announcement about their deep connections to Australians and other indigenous people in our region."
Such interactio between Neanderthal and Cro Magnon people seems a certainty. I had to have happened. The circumstances are all that is pure conjecture. Neanderthal remains have only been found in Europe, Eurasia and the Middle East to my knowledge. And parts of Asia. I am unaware of any discoveries of them in the Southern Hemisphere, or the Western either. No evidence of them has been found in tbe Americas. Which is interesting.
The Australian aboriginal pics, above, do show Neander features. What the connection may be, I am lost to comment on. It makes for interesting discussion and postulation, though. The possibilities inherent in human evolution and development are endless, branching in directions as yet undiscovered.
Just as many modern animals have connection and resemblance to Pleistocene mega fauna, humans have similar features of now extinct races. The lions of Tsavo have certain features that parallel the Smilodon, and other saber toothed cats. Venetic anomalies found in modern bears, like the Grizzly, suggest that DNA from extinct species, like the Short Faced bear, is still floating around. That humans have similar developmental anomalies is certainly not surprising, and is food for thought.
I thought it was the Eastern Europeans who interbred with Neanderthals??
The first mixing was in the area which became north africa/mediteranian as modern humans began to migrate out and found Neanderthals living there. It is believed this is critical since some of the Neanderthanl genes may have contributed to greater immunity and even larger brain size. But its likely that for thousands of years they lived together in the same area so a lot of mixing could have come about.
But there are more traces than found there in the human genome, concentrated in certain areas, and its also now believed that as the migration continued so did the mixing as modern humans arrived. In a sense the Neanderthal did not disspear, but we continue their legacy.
Humans may have interbred with many more cousin species as well as the land was populated not by just one major species, but a number of them at the same time. The Neanderthal dna found in the depths of Asia is slightly different, for instance, suggesting they may have interbred with more local human cousins.
the aboriginal people also claim by their own stories that they were the first humans as we know it, and they claim that their people migrated to africa, not the other way around as some historians claim, pretty interesting nevertheless.
