Yes, it seems to vary a lot by state... I have roots in Minnesota,
and obtained two death certificates quickly and inexpensively
from the Minnesota Historical Society.

Default Indiana birth & death certificates

Before I let my membership lapse, I found tons of information from the Indiana birth and especially the death certificates. It was extraordinarily helpful. Having said that, if you let your paid membership lapse as I have, you can't even see some of the stuff you've saved to your tree. I always make sure to actually download the images.

Several years ago I purchased death certificates from Vitalchek. You can also order birth certificates, but I do not know the process.

Each state has their own laws about whose birth certificates you can access.

VitalChek is usually more expensive than just ordering it through the state department of health.

Yeah, VitalChek just order it from the state for you and charge you an extra $50 for it when you can order it from the state yourself. Yet it's not any quicker or easier with VitalChek (because you still have to supply the same information and any required accompanying documents) so it's not like you're paying extra for the convenience or anything. You're literally paying $50 extra for no good reason.
