I think you need to use the internet to find the location of shelters, look up their location on google earth and find one in a cheap looking neighborhood, use craigslist to find rent rates.

Then apply for a job and see what happens.

Knoxville is a possibility as there are cheap rentals near both the animal shelter and the zoo.

OKC. Maybe the storms might be too big tho.

Note these places are much more boring (VS Vegas) too.
By the way, boring doesn't bother me, since I don't go out anyway! When I'm not working I stay in my place and play video games!! So I don't really care about outdoors activities!

I was going to suggest the OKC area as well. If salary isn't that big a deal you can check out Banfield. They have many locations here (affiliated with PetSmart). Good luck.

Omaha has a wonderfully low cost of living and low unemployment, but year-round biking is not a reality if that is important. Very few areas of Omaha have a bike lane and the snow or wind during the winter makes biking impossible. Mass transist in Omaha is lacking. While most of Omaha has *very* reasonable housing, downtown, especially near the Old Market, is higher. You can find cheap housing near downtown, but it will be in higher crime areas. Summers are also very hot and humid so you'd need to be willing to put up with the heat late June-Aug.

I *love* Omaha's affordability, the seasons, ease of employment for mid-to-lower paying jobs, and the friendly people. Spring and fall are beautiful. The heights of winter and summer are evil. Nebraska is a very Christian red state, with Omaha and Lincoln having some pockets of more liberal thinkers.

We've been here 13 years and are in the process of moving from Omaha and there are many things I will miss, most of all the affordable housing!
