I plan on moving out my stuff and putting it into storage initially, then booking a room through Air B&B (probably same one I used for my scouting trip) so I can leisurely look for a long term housing situation. I know a lot of people first find their new apartment and then move directly from their old to new place, and am wondering if there are any unforeseen disadvantages of doing it my way, except that I will have to pay movers again to move the large items from storage to my new house/apartment, whenever I find one that's suitable.
If you can afford the moving expenses, you'll have more options for housing, since you can delay longer if you need to wait for your first choice to become available.
Something like a POD or Relocube (much smaller) can also be stored and then brought to your apartment. That may not be in your budget, but that's other option for your consideration.

Is the only advantage of POD that you can "pack at your own pace"? I do not see the advantage of using this service if one has enough space to store boxes as they are packed... am I missing something?
If you are using a storage locker, you'd load a truck in your original city, unload the truck at the storage locker, and then reload the truck at the storage locker when you found a place and then unload at your apartment.
Otherwise, You would load the relocube or POD in the original city. It would go into storage in or near your new city, and then they can bring the cube or POD directly to your new apartment for you. There would just be one session loading and one session unloading.
Apologies if that's not what you are doing. That's what I gathered from your original post.

No, this is what I was asking, but I'm not understanding how exactly this is advantageous, because looking at POD's estimates, this seems to be costlier than simply unloading into a storage unit and then having local movers load and move to storage.
That's why I wrote that it may not work with your budget. In my case, I used two relocubes (smaller than PODS), and that was cheaper than renting a storage locker and paying movers twice, but obviously your situation may differ.

Some people dislike other people messing with their stuff. They've had too many costly surprises that way, and far prefer to do it themselves. But every situation is different.
I thought PODS would not be too expensive until I priced it out one day for a move. Ouch.
If it a move you know is going to be a long-term situation, I mean you aren't going to want to leave a year later, the way you are describing is the only way to do it. A little more trouble in the beginning, but pays off long-term. I don't know anyone who doesn't get to an area, and after learning that area, want to move somewhere else. Move, live ultra-simply in a small apt, and a year later, reassess your situation, get your stuff out of storage and be happy that you took the time to find the place that's right for you.
this is how we moved. in the end, most of the stuff we had in storage became unnecessary after 6 months of non-use. all our seasonings were replaced and most of the clothes no longer fit the kids. my speakers got damaged in the move so I threw them out.
I think we got a spider infestation from the storage place though and that didn't cost us anything.
