Wherever you have visted for short vacations, did you end up moving there? Or was the feeling short lived after returning home?

Nearly my entire life when ever I took a vacation it was - been there , done that - no interest in doing it again.

That all changed in 2009 when I took a long weekend to visit southern DE. I thought to myself - this feels like home. For the next 4 years I could not wait to go back to the same area for a week every year. I picked different times of the year so I could experience the changing seasons.

As soon as I retired and sold my house I moved there to enjoy my retirement. Been here 4 1/2 years and love it. Don't want to live anywhere else. I have no desire to travel anywhere else for a vacation.

Sort of! I had been vacationing in Las Vegas for years and originally had 2 uncles and an aunt here. By the time I actually got to move here my uncles had died and my aunt moved to Arizona. I wanted to retire in Las Vegas because of the low COL and the weather. You don't have to shovel sunshine!

Or ...did you split the difference and move to an actual city (with/for all those services and amenities)
but choose a city that is NEAR where you vacationed before?

If that were the question... I'd say yes.

True, but I read it still gets pretty cold in the winter and snow at times.

I've always felt like this is somewhat of a mental trap. I mean you're on vacation, of course you're going to have fun and enjoy your time there (at least I hope). I've had that same feeling when visiting friends or family too. There's something about having the free time to explore a new place that's intoxicating, but the reality of living your everyday life there could be way different. The more touristy a place is, the more this is the case in my opinion.

Yes, I just wrote a post under the thread about moving to NYC and it being a mistake. I moved to Port Townsend, WA when I semi-retired in 2010. It's a charming town that calls itself "The Victorian Seaport" on the sign as you enter town. Charming downtown, lots of Victorian houses, on the water, the whole bit. Mobbed with tourists in the summer. Makes a lot of those "best places to retire" lists. But it turned out to be too isolated for me. It's very hard to buy things like clothes or even simple electronics necessities there, the medical care is a bit lacking (the hospital is fine for routine things, but there are few specialists in town and it takes months to get an appointment), and getting to the Seattle airport is a major PITA. So after 5 years I moved a couple hours south to a larger town which is working a lot better for me as all of those things are easier/better here. I go back a few times a year to visit my best friend up there, and every time I go, I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

I did--twice now. First I moved to Western North Carolina. Absolutely loved it. Then I met my husband and because of employment circumstances moved to Gettysburg. Absolutely love it here. My husband doesn't want to move anymore and I want to stay put for a few years, but since he's quite a few years older than me one day eventually down the road I hope to move to a few more of the places I've visited while on vacation. Chickamauga/Chattanooga's a huge draw. If I'm able to, I don't think I'll be able to pass that move up. The Sharpsburg area's another place I'd love to live for a little while. I love moving around; would like to continue doing that in my older years once my husband's gone--since he under no circumstances wants to ever leave PA again; we're also just starting a business so it wouldn't be practical to uproot that if it's going well (which would be nice!!).

Not in Las Vegas. I've lived there for 9 years and the only place it got in the low 20's was in Pahrump which is 60 miles outside of Las Vegas. The concrete in the city soaks up the heat and you don't get the cooling off at night to that much of a degree like you would in a natural undeveloped desert. Snow is maybe a handful of days. During the 9 years I lived in Las Vegas, I missed the big snow storm there while I was visiting my family for the winter! Maybe you get a dusting, but I don't remember anything significant all those years I lived there.

So, as long as you plan to live in the city, you don't have to worry to a significant degree about cold or snow (unless you think some nights during the winter months in the 30s is pretty cold---then you probably need to spend a few winters in PA to remember was cold really is!)

In 1972 we took a Florida vacation. I kept asking myself "why are we putting up with snow, ice, etc. I walked into a business and I found that I new the owner. He offered me a job. We went back up north, sold our house and moved. Never regretted it.
