I haven't decided which company's services am going to use to ship my car, but am just planning stuff right now and packing some of my household items.
In general most of the car shipping companies allow to put about 100lbs of personal items in the back of the trunk. But while going through the company websites, it seems they allow suitcases of 100lbs or 2 of 50lbs.
Any idea if we can put multiple boxes totaling upto 100lbs since I don't have suitcases which I could use?
Infact I was thinking to put all my clothes in multiple trash bags and throw those in the trunk, that way I will be able to ship most of my clothes.
When I shipped my Car when I moved, They allow'ed 100#. (But did nothing to verify the weight)
I put in Bulky "low" value Stuff (Car is a HatchBack). The back seat was down and the Whole Area was filled with stuff. Driver said as long as the front seats were clear He was good with it. (Said i could put stuff on the Front Seat Passenger Floor if it wanted, Tossed A bag of stuff there. also).
I filled my trunk with a few boxes, (dishes and cookware...cost of eating out can get high while waiting for your things to arrive!) a toolbox and some blankets...smallish car, so not that much fit....company didn't say a word..not sure what the weight was...one thing I would advise, if you are not taking them with you in person, is to pack a file with important papers, etc and put it in the trunk....depending on how you are doing your move...my car arrived a week before my pod...and the pod is in storage 20 some miles away while I am renting, while looking to buy....you will need lots of documentation to change your driver's license, etc.....just ignore if this advice does not apply to your situation!

I would absolutely not put important papers in the trunk of a car that you're shipping. In fact, I would only put things in the trunk that are unimportant and you can replace. They should get there just fine but who knows. When I shipped a car several years ago I was not allowed to put anything in the trunk.

I am going to carry all the important papers along with me in the rental car that I would be driving since I would need those for signing lease and for transferring drivers license and registering my car since I am moving from mid-west to west-coast. Keeping a set of blanket and maybe pillow is a great idea, but I might as well keep it in my rental car. I might keep some empty boxes if I am left with any at the end.

Most states inspect vehicle prior to registration.

If you are driving a rental car, that's definitely a different situation and should make things a lot easier!
You should be asking that question of the transport company. It's up to them to decide what to allow and what not to allow.
And if they do allow, read your contract. They are likely to disclaim any responsibility for any of your stuff. If anything turns up missing on delivery you'll be back here asking "What are my rights?" and you won't have any.
