My experience with anything USPS has been sketchy at best for probably the last 10 years... and it seems to get worse as time goes on.

More parcels everyday when the service was optimized to carry market ads with 1st class letters riding along. And the demands of parcel delivery push start times to later in the day meaning more working at night with the ensuing error rate coming from reading small print in the dark.

I think we told them to hold it and we'd notify once we got our new address. They don't forward junk. Weird thing: I didn't get my W2 from my former employer because their left hand didn't tell their right hand about my change of address. Called them up, no worries, they sent me a replacement at this addresss. My wife used to work in HR, said they won't forward tax documents. Then about a week later, it came in the mail, forwarded from the old address. Say what?

We get the USPS Informed Delivery. They basically email us images of what's going to show up in our mailbox (letters and packages), and it's free. We like it, think it's potentially a good security thing. I saw the picture of my forwarded W2, knew to expect it.

It depends on what ancillary service endorsement the sender used.
All original first mailed tax documents have an endorsement that instructs the USPS to not forward the envelope and return it to us with the new person's address. If the employee calls and request a duplicate because the original did not arrive, we will resend the document but this time remove the endorsement so it gets forwarded. Tax document forwarding can be prevented or allowed based on the service endorsement the sender placed on the envelope.

In theory, or 90 something percent of the time it will be returned.. I will often see pieces come to the new address with the yellow sticker saying the change of address order has expired or the sender requested non forwarding.
