I am renting a room with 2 other guys older then me. I am new to this so I dont know what to do etiquette wise. I am a very shy, quiet guy and keep to myself. What are some ways to mend the relationships to my room mates and keep them happy.?

If you want to break the ice, talk sports. Anything you may know about Baseball, Football... even just as a casual fan.
SuperBowl is coming up. GREAT opportunity to break the ice right there.

Tell them this joke:

Why does Donavan McNabb's Mom always make sure that he eats his Chunky Soup right out of the can?

Because he chokes whenever he gets close to a Bowl!

Besides that, just be pleasant & considerate (which you sound like you already are.)

(Sorry Donavan -- DM's a good guy, it's just a funny joke.)

Good luck

Living in close quarters with strangers can be awkward at first. Be observant to how your roommates behave, listen closely to what they talk about, see what they watch on TV. In other words, figure out what's interesting and important to them.

For example, if one of them cleans up right after he eats, then you know he cares about neatness. If the other takes off his shoes and they sit in that spot for days, then you know that orderly-ness is not a priority for him.

If one of them doesn't miss a single episode of Top Chef or CSI, or if one of them flips between the ESPN stations, then you know what kind of entertainment each prefers.

Be considerate. If you see something that needs to be done, such as taking out the trash, do it. However, there is a fine line you don't want to cross - not knowing the personalities of your roommates, I don't know whether they'll see you do that and "assign" you that task forever. That's a rut you don't want to get stuck in.

Clean up after yourself. Don't leave dirty dishes around that become science projects. Don't leave whiskers in the sink.

If you're going out to the store, ask if anyone needs anything.

Share your newspaper subscription if you have one.

Over time, as you all get to know each other, the newness and awkwardness will pass.

Mend? Did something already happen.

Food is best!

But it's not your job to make them happy, you should be in a business relationship.
So unless you/them are wanting friends out of this- stick to yourself, mind your business and just be cordial. But obey the rules and pay on time.
