So I'm wondering if there any people out there on City Data who have moved for reasons other than being relocated for a job? Going across the country on a whim just isn't common, unless you have a good reason. Having a job is usually a pretty good one

But what else? Where were you from and where did you go, and why? Were you someone from Maine who just could not stand snowflakes and decided to head to Miami? Did you live a really rural area and wanted something else?

I'm just trying to see what are some other factors. I'd imagine climate would be a huge factor for people's moving choices. Another reason I'd say is family/friends.

I've been on this kick to move, but I have not a clue where I'd want to end up. Part of me loves Las Vegas and wants to move there, but, I enjoy it as a vacation and I'm afraid to ruin that experience. I also love that kind of weather!...Florida is pretty awesome, but I do loathe the humidity LOL

I guess I'll figure it out eventually!

So, tell me, why did you move?

Sorry - we moved for work - but started looking because of hurricanes, kids education, high property taxes, insurance, hectic pace of life. South Florida to Minnesota - vast difference.

weather was the reason for us. After 40+ yrs of our lives raised and living in WI, the winters just became too much. As we were able to take our jobs with us, and our child was out of the house ( making us 'young' empty nesters ) it made a relocation much easier to plan and do. It was something we toyed with for a few years, but things just fell into place.
Jobs? check. Sell existing house? Had offer first day it listed ( we know, very lucky ). Employer allowing us to work from home? yep. So we felt that we were given this one great chance, so we jumped at it. Biggest drawback is not seeing family as much, but we did this for us and have been very happy in our decision.

I take it you moved to South Carolina? I'm just curious as to why? What made you decide somewhere in South Carolina and not.. North Carolina? Georgia? Florida? etc.

Sold in Southern California in 2006 when housing there was four times per square foot as other places with similar job demand. Got a relo so I didn't pay anything to move, no realtor commisions, no packing, no shipping, etc. Moved to CO where housing didn't bubble so it didn't fall as CA's fell, retained our equity. Moved to AL with same job also on a relo because our CO neighborhood was too sparse - not enough kids.

Moved out of Maine in 2007 - got tired of long cold winters (and shovelling snow), high heating bills, and a tax-happy state/local government.

Moved to the upstate of South Carolina and already knew people in the area. If I feel the need to be around snow the North Carolina mountains are close by. Plus, we love college football and we have travelled to many schools for games within a day drive. Plus, the summers here are nowhere near as bad as I thought they would be!

My husband and I are planning to do this in a couple of years. We're almost empty nesters. We've only stayed here for high school. Initially we were planning to just move out of the county, but I have bigger plans! Maybe it's a sense of adventure. Who knows.

I'm sure I can't find a place with nicer people than Pittsburgh. Yet, I'd love to get out there and experience other areas of the country first hand.

It's going to be hard finding a lower cost of living than here. Basically, I need to find an area of the country that has lower food and utility costs than Pittsburgh but similar or lower house prices. Pittsburgh housing prices are what keeps the cost of living low---so the only real savings I can find is in food and utilities since they tend to be on the high side here.

We'd love to retire in Costa Rica---true retirement might be attainable for us in a third world country.

I think alot of people just pack up and move across country not relating to a job. Or atleast they speculate about doing so...but don't because they either never done it, or don't know how to live away from everything they've ever known. A job is usually just a part of the reason. What they really want is a change of scenary from the same old **** every ****ing day!

I'll never forget, the time my friend came so close to moving to Las Vegas and becoming a bartender at one of the casinos/resorts. He decided to pay off debt first and by the time everything was paid, he didn't have enough for the move.

Had it been me, I would jumped ship the second those $6,000 hit my bank account LOL.

We were born and raised in WI, and liked many of the things we had in the Madison and surrounding areas. The winter though was too much, we never cared for any winter activities and are summer people. We considered Florida but we enjoy spending time both on the lake as well as in it; the fact that gators do as well didn't hit us as positive. But cost of living, insurance, etc was higher then we wanted to pay also. North Carolina was in the running, we have many biz contacts there and did some solid research as well. Thing was they can still get some winter/snow, and we felt if we were going to make this move then SC was the better choice ( we had spent a few days in Hilton Head the previous year and loved what we saw ). Being on or near a good lake, close to but not in a metro area ( but not big city though ), and close to some options for day trips were some of the priorities. So we ended up in a burb of Columbia, and will be in a neighborhood on the lake here. A 20 minute drive puts us in any shopping/eating/city offerings, but are in a rural type area for living. A bit over 2 hours takes us to Charleston, which we've done many times, for a great beach/historical day trip. And 2 hours the other way takes us to the mountains for a scenic drive.
Not to say everything here is perfect, but it was as close to perfect anyplace could be for what we wanted for our needs.
Oh, if you don't like humidity...... SC isn't your thing either!

I moved to get away from the combination of heat and humidity.
My company has locations in just about every state so I picked a place and I went!
Kiddo is still in college and didn't want to go too far away, but I did end up in the mountains on the opposite end of the state almost 10 hours away from where I was before. Went to a small city from an urban area that was about 12 times the size. It's a completely different world here.
