Ideal Topics: Who What When Where Why

What territory do you think is a nanny state and why? Whether it is benefical or not I thought it would be interesting to know public views on nanny states.

A state that tries to control every aspect of human behavior. "Benevolent totalitarianism", so as to speak.

California is the archetypal nanny state, from what I've heard Washington and (sadly) Illinois have also gone in that direction.

Utah has some pretty nutso, hyper-controlling laws from what I hear.

I'm curious how? All I can really think are smoking laws and red light cameras, but that's hardly just OUR issue.

Bars are open until 4-5am in many areas, taxes are middle of the pack as far as US states, they aren't freaks on things like abortion or gays...

California tends to legislate in favor of nanny issues but many of the laws are quite good. Also the "nanny" aspect of California is not just the state legislature but also the voters. Recently laws that farmers must provide big enough cages for chickens to be able to turn around or cow and pigs to be comfort in was a state-wide proposition that passed overwhelmingly. I think states that tend to be compassionate and empathetic may have "nanny" qualities.
