One example is, how California legislated stricter vehicle-emissions (pollution) standards than the rest of the USA. Automakers have to make separate (cleaner) models, just for sale in Calif. Another example is that San Francisco also banned state agencies from wasting money buying "bottled water" for social events. I'm sure there are many, many more examples. Possibly in the area of food / animal rights ?

Not only autos have to meet California standards but gasoline sold in California has to be reformulated to meet stricter emission standards. Plastic bags are being outlawed increasingly in many California cities and, of-course tobacco use is restricted more than any other state though many states are following California's example.
