Hi, i am new to this site and find it kind of complicated so i hope my post ends up in the right place. i have lived in hawaii for 18 years and have come to the conclusion small island living isn't for me anymore. it is very expensive to live here and wouldn't be able to retire here. it is also very transient here making it difficult to make/keep friends. over the years i have noticed many gay people moving here and then are gone within a year. i would like to relocate to a small/medium size city. i prefer rural living so commuting 30 minutes or so into the city would be fine. i was born and raised on a farm in wisconsin and do like that lifestyle. however, due to the severe winters there i would never consider relocating back there or any other state that has a similar climate. the cities i have considered are: walla walla, washington; vista, california; pendleton, oregon; omaha, nebraska and a few others that escape my mind. i would really like to hear from other gays who have relocated to rural areas near medium sized cities. plus anyone else who might have some good advice. i have seen many gays leave hawaii for other destinations only to end up drifting from state to state searching for the right location. i am not wired for that type of semi nomadic existence nor could i afford$ to wander aimlessly around the country. when i do relocate i will be looking to rent a room in a gay or gay friendly house. any advise will be much appreciated

Check out Chatham County, North Carolina. The areas south and west of Chapel Hill and Carrboro offer tolerant rural areas where you'll find various artisans working their craft and living "out". Carrboro and Chapel Hill are very liberal and offer an outstanding quality of life. The towns of Pittsboro, Haw River and Siler City are good areas to look at. Good luck!

Check out:
Santa Fe, NM
Denver, CO (it gets cold and snowy but there's a long warm & dry season)
Portland, OR
Seattle, WA
Reno, NV
Salt Lake City, UT
have you considered Florida? I would think Florida is worth a shot having lived in Hawaii for so long. Miami is obvious but there are many nice mid-sized cities such as Ft. Myers, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and everything along the gulf coast in this mid-section.
