IDK about that . The fact that cuban americans vote republican has more to do with economics and the whole embargo situation. If cuba was to be a state IMHO it would be democatic state with conservative values like alot of midwest states

Hawaii was never a Spanish possession. The Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by rebels who established the Republic of Hawaii. There was a lot of concern that the US had participated in the overthrow of the Queen as American Marines had departed their ship at the order of the US ambassador. As a result although the Republic was courting either Britain or the US to annex the islands out of fear of a counterrevolution or Japanese invasion and annexation neither did for a time.

The US sent an investigator to find out what had happened. The end result (not his as it was somewhat inaccurate if I remember correctly) was that while the Marines should not have departed the ship (as the ambassador had no authority to order them around) they did not take part in any fighting and were under orders only to protect American property and put a stop to any general lawlessness, but that as the American, British, and Japanese warships that were periodically stationed in Hawaii each represented more military might alone than the Kingdom of Hawaii had in entirety the landing of the Marines may have contributed to the Hawaiian military surrendering without a fight.

In any event there was a failed attempt at a counterrevolution, and as time wore (and it came to light that the US military hadn't taken any steps intended to support the overthrow of the Queen and if I remember correctly a new President was elected) the original opposition to American annexation of the Republic of Hawaii was overcome.

Similarly I do not believe Cuba was ever officially an American possession. It certainly existed as an American puppet state for a while due to the Platt Amendment, but I believe it was always officially independent.

If Cuba had become a state I think Miami would be a lot smaller today and less significant. Some of the people that visit Miami or have a second home there would have ended up in Cuba.

I don't think we go by what number of states "sounds cool." However I think it's plausible Cuba would not have become a state because it would be a later addition as a territory with a much more Spanish-speaking population. Hawaii became heavily Americanized and Oklahoma had enough land that the whites could overwhelm the American Indians.

Cubans in America are Republican, in part, because groups fleeing Communism often tend to be more Republican or are members of sub-groups that like Republicans. (Married Christians and businesspeople) I think I'd agree that as a territory Cuba would have been Democratic or possibly a "swing state."

It would be the hawaii of the caribbean. It would effect not only Miami, but Florida in general. Florida would not be as large, Cuba would take all those retirees.

Who cares! I'm sure Cuba is a lot more dynamic than unwaivering political party lines. With that train of thought our 50 states would be balkanized.

Miami's Latin influence would be much more "South America" than "Cuban" if Cuba were a US Territory. Cuban influence would probably mirror that of the Puerto Ricans: evident but not dominant. The politics of the area would probably still be dominated by Northeasterners who moved to the area or subsequent generations.
South Americans would probably dominate the culture but without a political voice since they don't have the fast-track "special right" that Cubans have toward citizenship (wet foot/dry foot immigration law).
