Construction hasn't started in California yet. Won't start intill 2012 , and will take 2x longer then any NE Project.
Yes they have. Routes are being cleared, contracts are being finalized, rail lines are being prepared. The bulk of the work has yet to start considering it is nearly a 500 mile route. But no other state has taken any independent action of allocating funds and getting projects started other than California.

It's a $19 billion deficit [btw Texas has an $18 billion deficit]. California doesn't wait and twiddle its thumbs like the majority of states. Most progressive measures start in California.

In fairness, CA pays a sick amount of federal taxes for a very long time. If anybody deserves it, they do. As they have been thoroughly you know what by the federal government. The budget "problem" there is largely due to the progressive tax structure. The Tax Foundation - Educating Taxpayers Since 1937 has all the data.
To Nexis, sorry to disappoint but the construction has definitely started, he is right, ground has been broken... it started in July 2010.
I for one am very excited about all of the new high speed rail across the country, so it is good that CA is off to a head start.

My family lives in SF now and they are PI$$ED about how the state handles its taxes, so maybe there's more to it. So you don't think the housing crisis in "bubble-prone" cities like LA and SF had nothing to do with it, huh?
There is, however, a lot of excitement about high-speed rail.
We need a coast to coast high speed rail line, I imagine it is the airlines fighting that. Are we so third world that we can't keep up with europe or Japan
Europe and Japan are probably about 50 years ahead of US in high speed trains...

I'm sure it had a lot to do with it, but it isn't all there is to it, the bubble hit several states and cities, including here in Chicago.
