My boyfriend and I are looking for the perfect town for us..

Here's what we're looking for:

East coast or Central

Something small & charming, historic maybe.

Moderate climate
(More important that the Summers aren't too hot, but we'd also love to find a place that doesn't get much snow either.)

Easy to drive/not much traffic

Nature/nice scenery

Decent hospital nearby

Airport within forty five minutes

Would also be nice if it was a bit artsy, as we're both photographers.

Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "small town?" People use that term and mean everything from a little dot on the map to a city of 250,000.

One town I thought of when reading your post is Vernon Center, Minnesota. It's a nice, small town of about 300 in Minnesota's beautiful tallgrass prairie country. In addition to the prairie, the area has woods, lakes and hills. Although it is a really small town, it's only 20 minutes from Mankato, MN, a small city/metro area of about 60,000 people. There's two hospitals, a mall, several shopping centers and a university in Mankato. The weather is variable -- cold winters (but not as cold as northern MN) and mild summers (with the occasional heat wave). It doesn't snow very much, the average yearly snowfall per year is only 40 inches. Minneapolis-St. Paul airport is about 1 and 1/2 hours away, Sioux Falls, SD airport is 2 hours away. Mankato has an airport, but there's no airline flights as of right now. There's a thriving arts community in the area (especially in Mankato), and Minneapolis is only a 90 minute drive away. Other nearby small towns are Good Thunder, Madelia, Nicollet, Lake Crystal and Amboy.

If you're looking for a bigger town, St. Peter is a small college town of 11,000 about 10 miles north of Mankato. It has a much more thriving arts scene because of the college and is only 50 minutes from the Twin Cities.

Kazoopilot's description sounds wonderful - grew up in the Phoenix area - there were less than 50,000 people in the valley when I was growing up there - great place. Now there are more than 5 million in the valley - too many people, too much traffic - too much everything except peace, quiet and space.

Check out Cookeville, Tennessee.

It's got 30,000, it has an historic downtown area with several museums and art galleries, two symphonies, excellent schools, gorgeous countryside with waterfalls, gorges, lakes, rolling hills, a mild climate with four very distinct seasons, a large hospital, and it's 60 interstate miles from the Nashville airport (70mph speed limit the entire way).

Maison, GA is stunning.

Madison is a city in Morgan County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,636 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Morgan County.
Most of its nearly 100 Antebellum homes have been carefully restored, which led to Holiday Travel magazine's naming Madison "The Prettiest Small Town in America." In 2001, Madison was voted the #1 Small Town in America by Travel Holiday Magazine.

I'd recommend looking into Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Summers are mild because of the northern latitude and the sea breeze. Winters are also milder than interior New England because of the proximity to the ocean. The population is about 20,600, which is quite big by New Hampshire standards but seems comparable to the other suggestions you're getting. It's big enough to have a very walkable downtown and a strong artsy vibe.

The town is very historic (lots of preserved 17th-19th century homes); the coastal scenery is on your doorstep, while the lakes and mountains are only an hour away. There is some vacation traffic in the summer but nothing like in big cities. There are also public transportation options, including buses to Durham, Dover, Portland ME and further north, as well as Boston. There is also train service to Portland and Boston in Durham. Manchester airport can be reached in 45 minutes, although a bit more time may be needed in bad weather.

I would look at Bucks County PA, Either Doylestown or New Hope, both with a significant art scene, historical, and close to Philly and even NYC with access to both Philadelphia and Newark airports. Though the area still retains it's small town feel and rural soroundings it has (fairly) easy access to major cities

I will say though this is an hour to two from the shore

BTW - New Hope is directly accross the river from Lambertville as suggested above

Just returned from a vacation in the WV mountains; we do this every Thanksgiving, and always on our itinerary is a day trip to Frederick, MD. I adore this town; quaint, artsy and an easy drive to either Baltimore or Washington.
