I never been to the TX gulf coast, but I didn't really like the Gulf over in Florida. Nice sunsets I'll give it that, but the water was just very dull and lukewarm (this was in summer though), plus the beaches were just plain boring, it offered what any typical US beach can.
The Jersey shore has a lot of entertaining shore towns (Wildwood, Seaside Heights, Atlantic City, Ocean City), much of it cannot be topped by any other US coastal towns. It also has some more laid back shore towns too (Cape May, Sandy Hook, LBI), so I don't know where you can go wrong
Outside of the tourist traps, the Jersey Shore has some of the East Coast's most beautiful beaches. I found the Gulf beaches lacking waves (which I love) and it didn't have the nice sand that the Jersey shore does.
I would say palm trees, but there are some idiots that decide to plant palm trees in New Jersey to give it a beachy feel. I don't know how they survive the winter, but I've seen palms up there in Jersey and even Delaware and Maryland too. I think they all died in the blizzards though.

never been to the Texas Gulf Coast. Just a hunch, but if you leave near the Jersey Shore they'd be no compelling reason to visit the Texas Gulf Coast, and vice versa. Can anyone who's been to both speak to this?
There are only a couple of palms that will survive up there, most which never grow to be very tall.
You can plant almost any variety of palm in the Houston area & it will survive, even Coconut Trees. The only other places in the United States you can grow a coconut tree is Southern Florida & Hawaii of course.
