NJ residents are the opposite of down to earth, they tend to beleive they are gods chosen people, and they gossip and talk bad about ppl behind there backs too.
It seems people with trust issues or covert aggression tenancies believe all southerners are talking bad about them behind there backs or fake just because they are nice and friendly to there face.

As far as down to earth... It's gotta be small towns across every state.

Amish country?

My travel experiences are limited. There are rural parts of Arkansas, my home, that strike me as very "Down to Earth."

If you want a place with cold winters and a non-transient population there are small towns in Pennsylvania that look like they'd fit.

My GUESS would be maybe the upper midwest or northern New England.

I'd say San Antonio is pretty down to Earth. I like it here.

San Diego is definitely not down to Earth. It is superficial, just like the rest of California, especially southern California. So many shopping centers selling overpriced clothes don't exist in down to earth places.

I wonder if parts of the Dakotas would work? They seem to be fairly frugal and stable in economics anyway.

That's all you get on City-Data is stereotypes. Just get use to it.

My vote goes for the Great Plaines states. Very laid back there, don't seem to care about much.
