What city size would you say is the best? Not too small, not too big.

Here is a table:
Table of United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I would say Omaha at about 850,000.

Beyond a doubt, the best size city offers the following:

1. A nice variety of food and shopping choices.
2. An easy commute, with little road rage, and not being stressed by traffic when you get to work.
3. A feeling of safety and not having to look over your shoulder for threats.
3. A realization that none of your neighbors care about you or what you think or care about.

This is the perfect size city.

I agree, we chose Columbia b/c it was in our comfort zone w/just over 700k in the metro - big enough to offer what most of what we are looking for, but as pw72 said, no crazy traffic (outside of 1 bad interchange at rush hour which we don't use anyway) or obscene suburban sprawl.
