I am sure if you told them the NYC MSA would one day be close to 20 million people they would think you were mad and tell you there is no way a city could sustain it self with that many people. Yet they do it. Same thing with 50 million people in a MSA.
Then by the time that happens I will ask God to reincarnate me on a less crowded planet

LOL funny but in reality even if some of the largest MSA's are at 50 million people there will be many of rural cities and towns left. Just look at Colorado. I think the Front Range Urban Corridor has the potential to someday be close to 50 million people yet the plains and mountains will not be nearly as crowded.
It will be centuries before the world is anything like Coruscant on Star Wars.
As a side note I would love to live in a planet like that.

Let's hope that if the world ever gets that way it will be like star wars and not Megaman X.
Don't worry guys I don't think that we'll ever have cities that will look like something straight out of Star Wars or some other sci-fi movie. I think what is more healthy would be more like a Greenwich village type of cities that can hold many people in close proximity to each other, and they have lots of nature space surrounding it. It will not be a putrid or horrifying experience, more so than every 2.5 miles will be nature in between the city centers. So you can walk and there would be empty nature space. In order to have a 50 million MSA, it needs to be very livable and that should be the top concern. The best type of cities are like some I heard in Norway, where there is development of a city then suddenly there is a sudden abrupt stop and just nature after that. Portland, Oregon sorta does that too I think with urban growth boundaries so city living will be the ultimate nature getaway.

I agree that Arcology and natural spaces would be a good idea but good luck getting businesses and cities on board with it. If it doesn't give them a better short-term bottom line, sprawl will just develop out of control until the city is closer to Lagos or Dhaka than it is an ultra-modern New York City or Tokyo.
My answers: Economically: Yes Socially: Maybe, it would be another thing for people to feel unwarranted importance about lol Environmentally: Never
Don't we already have something like this with the Bos-Wash corridor? Really, if you want to get down to it, you could argue that it stretches from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia all the way to Portland or Bangor in Maine.
Not going to happen. Native born are not replacing themselves and immigration is falling off. We'll end up like Europe soon. Except we won't have the "cities as museums" thing except for a few of the older ones. Expect more Detroits and Buffalos.
I agree that Star Wars like cities are unrealistic but Star Trek like cities is not. Plus it would not require our cities to have 50 million people to look like that just more technology that will come in the next few hundred years.
