Hello guys, I'll be traveling to cities listed below. I'll travel by plane between them. What I'm wondering is, in which cities do I DEFINITELY need a car? I'm a tourist as I said. These won't be long trips, 4-5 days in each city on average.
  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
  • Las Vegas
  • Chicago
  • Buffalo City
  • Boston
  • Philadelphia
  • New York

Thank you very much. Buffalo, NY, that's correct. Why are you so shocked? Isn't there anything to see over there?

Buffalo seems out of place with the other cities listed,
What do you think you'll see in Buffalo? if its Niagara Falls you want to see i'd recommend the Canadian side as theres more to do fallwise,If its just to see another American city i'd swap Buffalo for Washington (Smithsonian's 22 museums will keep you busy). I'd also recommend some of the tours out into the desert when in Vegas, and maybe a tour into the mountains while you are on the west coast as your itinerary doesnt seem to include any of Americas amazing geography,Cities while being alive and exciting can tend to get a bit generic after visiting half a dozen of them...

Buffalo is 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, so the entire region is most definitely of interest as a tourist. Is it in the same category as the other cities? Obviously not as it is a much smaller region geographically and population-wise. The streets do not bustle as in many other cities, but neither is it a sprawling late 20th century suburban-style city. It may not be as "exciting" as Times Square or Las Vegas Strip, but every city offers a unique view of the US.

Things to do and see in WNY and Southern Ontario:
- Niagara Falls State Park (NY)
- Queen Victoria Park (NF, Canada)
- Clifton Hill (NF, Canada)
- Maid of the Mist Boat Tour (NY and Canada)
- Whirlpool Cable Car (Canada)**
- Winery Tours (NY and Ontario)**
- Architectural Walking Tours, Frank Lloyd Wright (Buffalo)
- War of 1812 Tours (Ft. Niagara NY, Ft. Erie, Ft. George Ontario)**
- Boat and Sailing Tours (Miss Buffalo, Pride of Buffalo)
- AAA baseball (Buffalo)
- Area Festivals (Buffalo, Tonawanda, other)
- Buffalo neighborhood tours (Allentown, Elmwood Village of Buffalo)
- Regional gambling (casinos in NF NY, NF Canada, Buffalo, racetracks**)
- Art galleries in Buffalo (Albright Knox, Burchfield, more)
- Garden Walks (around Buffalo, South Park Conservatory)
- Church Tours (many many in Buffalo, Lackawanna)**(some)
- Music and theater (Buffalo)
- Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario**
- East Aurora NY**
- Rust Belt decay (sime areas of Buffalo) if you enjoy the dark side of things

Just off the top of my head.

etc

Those marked with ** will require a car, although some without the ** may require some paid transportation

Buffalo city is not in any way a tourist town, but coming from a region that differs geographically and culturally, and approached with an open mind, there is much to see and do.

plenty to do within a 100 mile radius sure. IN the city of Buffalo, well not really. The poster above pretty much elaborated the tourist activities in the area. Also, Toronto is very close by. Plenty to do in that city to keep you busy for days, and no car required (Toronto has excellent PT).

You've gotten solid advice on use of cars within the cities you'll be visiting. I'll offer you some advice on your inter-city travel plans (bolded above). Boston, NY and Philly have excellent train service between the three - cheaper and easier. SD and LA are also quite close, and I believe also have fairly frequent train service. I'm less certain about on the convenience of train service between LA and SF - flying v train might be a wash (Cali folks can advice you).

Although you didn't ask, unless you're visiting family/friends in Buffalo, I'd opt for Toronto if you want to see that part of the world.
