It may be from a foreign city or fictional as others have said. I highly doubt that is NOLA. There are no skyscrapers in the FQ, and certainly none on the East side of it (facing Jackson Square from the river)
I know that, I was taking liberties with the "stylized" theme. The white cathedral and the dome look a lot like their New Orleans counterparts.

I admit I'm not sure if it's a real city either.
Yeah, I dont think its a real place or a CA city but rather a product of the artist's imagination.

That is too short to be San Francisco, too big to be San Diego, too dense/short to be LA.

Pretty tho.

Two months later and I have no definite answer on the city, nor on the name of the author. A number of your suggestions do seem to at least partially fit the cityscape, yet none of them seem to fit 100%. Perhaps it is indeed an amalgam or pure fantasy cityscape. On the upside, I have since bought the painting and it's now hanging in my house! Yay!

I also agree that this is not a real place but rather the artist's imagination. It doesn't look like any city I have ever seen and I have pretty much seen them all except for China and it really doesn't look Chinese.
