You like the diversity. The advertising job opportunities. The arts. the intelligence of the people. The funkiness. But you need a place about HALF as expensive? Where do you go?

Obviously I'll have to sacrifice a lot of what I love about New York but where are New Yorkers relocating who are priced out?

Pittsburgh?
Louisville KY?
Providence?

Help me out here.

Austin. Pretty big city (1.5 million in metro), probably the greenest city in America, very progressive, very beautiful/outdoorsy, lots of arts/festivals/film/theater.

Yeah, Chicago comes to mind. I doubt that it's literally half as expensive as NYC, but it's an improvement in terms of cost. Maybe Philadelphia? I know, I know, people like to knock Philly, but in the right parts of town it's really pretty nice.

There are over 1, 000, 000 people living in poverty in NYC.

There are way too many poor people here in fact. Don't let that stop you. I think as a whole the city has a 20% poverty rate. You wont be the only one.

Louisville might work. Chicago is an option, though I doubt it's half as expensive.

St. Louis might be about half as costly. Some other midwestern cities: Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Cleveland

Yeah, move to New York. Hey, you might be in poverty but at least you'll have a New York address!!! Haha!

Saying you want a place half as expensive as New York is like saying you want a state with half the expense of the State of California.
