Would need minutes to a BIG CITY but with lots of wilderness close by. Greenery and forests..and would like the feeling of being somewhere remote. Tree covered hills or mountains near a nice body of water. Could actually view city from the hills. Would like a big city but also be able to get lost through back roads on a day trip. Pretty liberal as well.. Pretty much a dichotomy of country and city life in one spot. Let's go with the east side of the states for now.

A few clarification questions: what do you consider a "big city"? Can you give some population or density numbers, or examples of cities you know that you think are big enough / too small? When you say "minutes away" from the city, how long are you talking about? Are you talking about driving time to the downtown core, or to the urban edge of the city? As for the nice body of water, do you have something in mind (small ponds, big lakes, ocean)?
The east end of the country is too built out for the scenario you're looking for with proximity to a big city. The only somewhat large cities in the East with geography similar to your criteria (which entails being able to overlook from a rural setting) are Asheville NC, Knoxville TN and Chattanooga TN.
You'd probably be happier in the West. I immediately thought of Seattle, Portland, and Marin County, north of San Francisco. There is not much wilderness in the East like the West has.
The size of Chicago would be nice.. Was looking at Vermont...very pretty! Asheville is nice too. Are there any places in upstate New York along with Onondaga, and Rolling Hills? Would like Sleepy Hollow meets the city.
