Most places where inner city revitalizations have successfully fit malls in a walkable urban environment.
Here is LA, there is the Hollywood and Highland complex in Hollywood, Santa Monica place in Santa Monica at the end of 3rd st. Promenade, Colorado Blvd in Pasadena has Paseo Colorado.
Now, if you are talking about the traditional LAYOUT of a shopping mall with massive parking lots surrounding in a non-walkable layout, then I can agree with you. People still like a "shopping mall" but they are now more outdoor "lifestyle centers" where you can also choose either the mall options or walk down the same street and have the more "urban neighborhood" options.
