Vermont is also VERY big on tourism and is a vacation state for many people. Many people have vacation homes up there, go skiing, etc.

I would probably put Vermont on a regionally known basis, perhaps national. Not international, besides with Canada of course.

Honestly, there are many cities in this country that are probably better known than the states they're in, but the OP was asking for states so...

I would probably have to go with Hawai'i and Alaska for obvious reasons. I'm not sure how many people internationally could tell you what state Chicago or Seattle are in. Just my perception.

The "natural scenery" in Washington DC, Detroit and Chicago is a real killer.

Get thee behind me!
Signed, Minnesota
(an underrated gem -- which is just as well, because it keeps more riffraff out )

Maybe a reason why Houston gets a bad rep by many on here is they never visit. According Forbes 85% of visitors to Houston are either in state visitors or from Mexico, less than 5 million visitors annully from outside of TX or Mexico if my math is correct
