I need some help. I cannot afford to move and go look at places to move so I am basing my decisions on research and word of mouth. I am looking for a small town where things are within walking distance of home. I would like to be near a big city and need public transportation/ nearby trains to get to cities. I also am looking for somewhere close to go do things with my son.
At this time I cannot drive due to on going health issues but we are active people and I hate sitting around I like to be involved in things community, church, etc. We love the beach, anything new from art shows to childrens museums to concerts.
My son is also autistic and where we are at now he has horse therapy, behavioral therapy, occupational and speech therapy and they use the aba system. We get in home supportive services and respite care. I don't know what the schools are like or the programs other places. Any input would be great.
I cannot stand southern Cali anymore, no real public transit we are ways begging just to go grocery shopping. I has looking at Virginia, Maryland, north Carolina and Delaware area but I am open to anything at his point I just don't know where to look anymore - please help!
I know I sound like a "homer" but Cleveland fits your criteria perfectly:
1) Amazing Healthcare
2) Public Transportation with Healthcare places on the route
3) University Circle has children's museums, hospitals, non-profits, FREE concerts, etc
4) Low cost of living/affordable
Not the ocean, but Lake Erie has some sand beaches in the summertime.
Here are some links:
My daughter has autism and went there and they were great. There are plenty of resources on their website, if you are willing to consider the Syracuse area. Jowonio School
From what I hear, the Liverpool, East Syracuse-Minoa, Onondaga Central and Jamesville-DeWitt schools seem to be pretty good in terms of special ed for children with autism. I'm in the North Syracuse SD and thus far, they have made appropriate accommodations for my daughter.
Personally, I'd look for an apartment near the village of Liverpool, which is a nice, walkable village on Onondaga Lake. There is a huge park right there, with a library, grocery store, churches, public bus access and more. http://www.villageofliverpool.org/
