I know that in every California and Seattle affiiliate there is at least 1 Asian newsanchor/ prominent reporter on the tv newsteam.
How about other parts of the country?

One thing very interesting is that Vancouver, Canada is filled with Asians but yet they only have like 1 Asian newsanchor woman on their local affiliate, so I guess the Connie Chung syndrome didnt kick in up there?
Does anyone know about the UK, or Australia?

Hear in Queensland the news readers are still white, but a few local correspondents (people who do live updates or reports from a scene outside the news room) of asian heritage are poping up. It may be different in the other states.

The exception being the government owned Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) which is one of the main 5 free to air Channels we have hear.

It specialises in non english programming and has had Asian news anchors for it's Australian news progams for years.

For some reason it seems to mainly be ABC and SBS here.

In Orlando, it's all white/white/white...as in plastic-like, lots of hairspray and make-up (both the men and the women). There's not even an African American anchor on any of the four major networks during the early or late news broadcasts. I think there's one or two African Americans on the barely watched mid-day news, however no Asians.

Shern Min Chow is a very well known & respected Chinese-American news anchor in Houston. She has been at KHOU Channel 11 for over 16 years now. Shern Min grew up in Sunnyvale (Silicon Valley) California before coming to Houston in 1988.

Surprisingly there are two Asian news anchors in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami area. They are really good looking too! Florida doesn't have that many Asians to begin with so to have that type of exposure is pretty big and I would think an inspiration to Asians all over in Florida.

I think most local news stations hire anchors based on their ability. That said, most local news directors understand their audience. This is a polite way of saying, there is some discrimination that goes on, well under the radar, in filling these jobs. Why are there more Asian anchors along the west coast? Why does DC, Baltimore, and Atlanta hire more African Americans as anchors? I mean, really, there is a certain direction here, based on the demographics of the market. Is this right? Probably not. Is this a good business decision? Probably yes.
