First of all, I know that most of these women are neither real nor housewives, discuss!
Second, I know it may seen dumb, but it seems that Bravo looks for a certain something in cities to have a franchise that's worth looking into. It's not just the women that make the show, it's the location as well. It needs to provide a special backdrop. And of course, there has to be a certain demographic there as well
1) A critical mass of nouveau riche socialites. I don't think Boston could ever have Real Housewives, for instance, because the socialites there are old money and would never sign up to do a show like that
2) The city has to have a certain amount of glamor. I think Real Housewives of DC didn't work because the city didn't have the right party scene.
3) A culture of outrageous/alternative decadence. Atlanta has the black gay scene where the guys walk around in high heels. A city like Chicago is larger, but does it have a weird counterculture such as this?
4) Beautiful/iconic scenery. NYC has Manhattan, Orange County has the beautiful beaches, Beverly Hills has the hillside mansions. Atlanta has the old south look. NJ might be lacking though
5) A celebrity presence. The franchises have relied more and more on incorporating the celebrity friends of the housewives into the shows. Beverly Hills owns this, but such is the case in NYC, Atlanta, Orange County, and even NJ to an extent.
Based on this criteria, I'd say we could one day see a Real Housewives franchise in
Las Vegas
San Francisco
Houston
Dallas
maybe Chicago
I think the cities you mentioned would be good cities (Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, a city in Texas). IMO Denver would be cool, but I'm not sure if it has enough glamour for a Real Housewives. Some people were saying they were thinking of installing a Real Housewives franchise in Palm Beach, but it was probably a rumor or fell through. But Palm Beach would be cool as well.
DC was a flop but I personally think it may have been canceled because of security issues. You do have many secret service agents and other high government officials in the city, and they don't extra need tv cameras.
Seattle is next. I have no inside info, but this is obvious. Seattle can provide some opposite of the status quo, but still wealthy. Could be VERY interesting.
I think it needs to become more pedestrian . . . some obscure midwest city for starters. I would like to see "real housewives" in their natural habitats.
