If I were doing the trip I would take I-81 through the southern Appalachians, swing over to I-40 to Nashville and Memphis. Maybe take a paddleboat ride on the Mississippi.
Then head south, maybe on US-61 to see Vicksburg and Natchez before you hit New Orleans.
On the way back, I'd go along the coast, maybe spend a day at the beach in Gulf Shores or Destin, see Mobile, stop in Wakulla Springs for a glass bottom boat ride, then head over and up to Savannah, Charleston, etc.
With just 9 days i'd forget the west unless you want to be driving for most of the trip..
Blue Ridge Parkway is 550 miles of amazing scenery.
Charleston and Savannah are cities worth exploring and are somewhat on the way,Natchez Trace is a nice drive, and the Gulf Coast Beaches will keep you busy.
On the way down go thru Nashville.
On the way back go thru Atlanta.
