On the way back, I'd go along the coast, maybe spend a day at the beach in Gulf Shores or Destin, see Mobile, stop in Wakulla Springs for a glass bottom boat ride, then head over and up to Savannah, Charleston, etc.

Couple of food places to try along the way maybe> The Place Setting: Timeless Tastes of the Mountain South-(Blue Circle Cafe)

This place has gone commercial but might still be worth checking out > Dyer's Burgers - Memphis, TN
or Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - Downtown - Memphis
After experiencing New Orleans? That's not very fair to Savannah and Charleston.

With just 9 days i'd forget the west unless you want to be driving for most of the trip..

Blue Ridge Parkway is 550 miles of amazing scenery.
Charleston and Savannah are cities worth exploring and are somewhat on the way,Natchez Trace is a nice drive, and the Gulf Coast Beaches will keep you busy.

Ride through the mountains, Hwy 90 along the beach, Natchez Parkway, and Hwy 90 through Cajun country to Lafayette for great food and culture.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to infect the good people of those two clean, classy cities with whatever disease you picked up in NO.

If you visit NOLA, see if you have time to check out Lafayette, two hours west along I10. I think you'll enjoy the visit.
