One position is with a mid size company (5k employees) managing a couple teams in Charleston, SC. Benefits are par. Pay is $115k. The other is for a Big 4 company (Deloitte, PwC, etc.) doing similar work in the Northern Virginia area for which I used to work. Great benefits making $125k. Obviously quality-of-life and cost of living is a factor, although it's not cheap to live in Charleston...just cheaper. I would be relocating in both cases. I'm not sure which direction to go and just trying to find consensus. My wife doesn't work and stays home with my two young sons. 1 set of Grandparents live in Northern Virginia (8 hours from Charleston). The other set live in Southwest VA (6 hours from Charleston, 4 hrs from Northern Virginia).
Only other note is both of these jobs are tied to the federal work space. Any constructive opinions are appreciated!
Why don't you make a pros and cons list of both locations. Be true to yourself. The one with the most pros and the least cons (relative to one another) is the one you pick if, and only if, it aligns with your GUT feeling.
Obviously being closer to the grandparents in northern Virginia is another thing to consider.
I think for your situation, DC would be better. It's certainly going to be more expensive than Charleston, but you just can't beat all the opportunity and things to do there that Charleston (and many other cities) just doesn't have. Where are you moving from?
115k in Charleston, SC (metro) will get you waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay farther than 125k in DC area.
That's certainly true, and may be the deciding factor since he has a family to support. I just think it's important to always make sure there's opportunity where you end up.
This is a tough one, for different reasons, which have been mentioned. It may come down to things like pace of life, personal/family interests and schools, among other things.
Charleston, SC in a heartbeat dude! Charleston is in one of the most beautiful areas of the nation and DC is just a pit. It's a no-brainer kind sir...
Clearly you've never been to DC.
