Oh, the Minnesota Nice! (eye roll) It's only skin deep...

OP, it's because those places don't have much diversity.

lol [ref. to another thread of yours]

Or maybe there's another common denominator...

places that are predomantly white in the USA do tend to be more standoffish due to prevelant Scandanavian roots in certain places......yet at the same time, havnig a discussion on diversity is neither here nor there....just a seperate thought...and idea to ponder...these are all great places....typically with good schools, etc...low crime....just that the extroversion seems to be lower than other places...

A reserved, standoffish culture sounds like a living hell to me. I greet strangers all the time and go up and talk to everybody. I have no idea why a culture would be reserved and standoffish. People NEED other people. If all you have is yourself, you have little.

It does seem easier to have a conversation with a stranger in public the farther south you go.

Oh wow. Not an American so can't comment on the topic but I'd say it's very inspiring to hear that Americans do talk to strangers or at least try to. The thing I don't like about Europe it's that it's cold, reserved and standoffish. Here you may want to ask stranger a direction but the person will run away from you or look at you like you are a psycho. Hopefully I'm moving to America this summer and I would love to make friends but very afraid people will be standoffish... This list scares me because the states I chose as my possible future home residence were and still are Wisconsin and Minnesota

This explains the Dakotas, though I don't find South Dakotans to be standoffish. It is a more conservative area and some people are more reserved than others. However, people are individuals and I have met many good, caring, friendly people here. They just aren't going to immediately stick their noses in your business if you happen to cross paths.

people are reserved and standoffish when they dont like your behavior. people with bad behavior like to scoot up next to people that are well behaved. if there is one thing a person with bad behavior does not like is a neighborhood of people just like him. when they force him to do so, he shouts discrimination.

aren't republicans more extroverted than democrats? I remember reading an article written by liberal - democrats saying that conservatives/republicans smile more and are friendlier.

Wow - good way to bolster that "unfriendly Minnesotan" legend. Well done.
