Based on my travels, I would say the following would be good contenders:
Charlotte
Las Vegas
Phoenix
Dallas
Houston
Atlanta
Orlando
Miami
Indianapolis
Denver
Raleigh
What do you think?
Houston isn't planned. They have no zoning laws. Atlanta isn't planned. They just built stuff along the old beaten paths. Raleigh had a plan to be served directly by both I-40 and I-95, but obviously that didn't work because I-95 is out in the sticks.

They qualify for "generic" and "plastic", however.
Wow, did they bomb out the whole downtown in the 1960's and then build up again? What a shame. I know many downtowns in major American cities went through the same hideous urban renewal including some in the Northeast like Hartford and also where I live in ABQ is certainly no exception, but that gallery illustrates just how awful it was particularly in Charlotte.

These cities don't seem that planned to me. DC is planned. A city like Houston is the exact opposite of that. As far as generic and plastic, I assume from the collection of fast growing cities in the south and west (other than Indy), you mean new looking without much variety in ages of buildings. If so, then I would give the title to Las Vegas, the city that has grown the most explosively in recent decades. Still Las Vegas doesn't strike me as generic. So, maybe Phoenix. It's hard in that what seems non-distinctive to one person is not to someone who knows an area better. You could show me pictures of Detroit, Cleveland or Baltimore and I couldn't tell one from the other.

Thats because the OP never made it to Houston. He said he went to Dallas and Austin and was scared by some Mexicans in Austin and ran back to Connecticut, but I am doubting he ever made it to Texas. Doubt he has ever left Connecticut.

Well, I'm not really a fan of Texas, I'll be honest. I only drove through Houston. I went to Dallas and Austin and wasn't really interested in either of them. The cities of Texas are extremely isolated.

I see this comment thrown around on here and I don't understand it. 20 million people within a few hours of each other doesn't seem "extremely isolated" to me at all.
