Hi,

In trying to narrow down my move choice, can anyone tell me if Phoenix is similar in landscape to say the greater St.Petersburg FL area- or parts of LA- that is, mile after mile of chain restaurants, furniture stores, etc., but no culture of it's own? That's the vibe I'm getting from previous posts. This is not my cup of tea; I'd prefer a place with more culture or history, whatever that history may be. I'm very interested in South-Western culture and history- i.e. American Indian or Mexican, but I get the impression that Phoenix is a very "new" city with a lot of urban sprawl and commercialization. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

In 1950, Phoenix was half the size of Dayton. Now it has 4 million people. Most of the city is post-war growth, and most post-war growth is as you described. There is an actual city under there somewhere, but I had to dig deep to find it.

If you want a more distinct "southwest" feel, I'd recommend looking at Albuquerque or El Paso.

Why do people hate Phoenix so much? I think the place has some very beautiful homes.......it's very hot. But Phoenix looks really nice, and very (NEW) which I think is a good thing.

There downtown is a little suspect right now. But they have some serious developement plans going on.

Plus you are close to Los Angeles and Las Vegas......sounds pretty good to me.

We have friends and family there, and both of their neighborhoods are beautiful. I liked the place.

Right on! For a smaller city try Las Cruces, NM near El Paso

Santa Fe always gave me that "southwest" feel or the smaller places in the Arizona, New Mexico areas. I never really got that feeling in Phoenix. There were to many distractions.

Nobody hates Phoenix, but it is a post-war city which has a built form much like that described by the original poster. All the development projects in Dubai cannot recreate what coolfern is looking for. They are good for the city, though.
