Considering City-Data is an excellent resource for finding out and discussing different cities across the country and comparing the pros/cons and cultural differences between each of them, as well as the stereotypes and perceptions people have of them, as this website influenced your opinion of your own city? Has that influence been positive or negative?
I would describe it mostly as surprising, in my case. A lot of people on C-D seem to have rather strong opinions about Washington, D.C., since I guess it is often at the forefront of national news and politics.
But the reality of living in this area is quite different than the perception from outside the beltway. So, it's interesting to read the different perspectives.
No. A lotta people here have no idea what they're talking about. The same stereotypes keep getting thrown out in every thread, but the people saying them have never been or seen the city they're talking about, other than a layover in an airport or driving through on a freeway.
Back in 07 I put a small deposit on a new town house in Port St. Lucie, FL. I was caught up in that "I must get it now" kick that so many were in and since I liked South Florida I felt if I waited I would get pushed even further up the coast and St. Lucie was still close enough to base for what I do.. I was working in Costa Rica and being familiar with S FL I wasn't too familiar with Pt St Lucie. I flew up to close and found City-Data the night before I was ready to close. All the posts confirmed all the empty houses I saw around that city and I was getting the vibe from the FL forum that buying in St. Lucie was not the best idea at the time.
So I never went to closing. So what! I lost a $500.00 deposit. Best move I ever made because the prices just crashed even more afterwards.
It hasn't changed my views on things, but it's made me realize how naive and vocal people are on topics they know nothing about. It makes me face palm a few times per session.
I've relocated since joining this board, but can't say that it impacted my decision any. I look for different things than most people, so most opinions on here run contrary to what I value. That's OK since were all different with different likes and dislikes. I do like reading people's opinion though even if they don't influence mine.
Most people usually defend the place where they live. It's just human nature to do so.
And that's what people know best. So, nothing really to see there.
I guess so. I moved about every two years growing up so I have very little attachment to a place. Because of that, I am also a lot more picky about where I live vs most others (at least in my area) either stay where their roots are, or move off someplace 'cool' like Portland, Seattle, or SF.
Actually my impression of LA has improved a bit. As a suburbanite I always had a low opinion of LA proper but I've come to appreciate a few things about LA that I probably took for granted.
