This is kind of alternate history.

Lets say there were four official languages, English, German,And Spanish.
And each language has an area where it is the primary language.

German speaking states:
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas
Minnesota
Iowa
Missouri
Wisconsin
Illinois
Michigan
Indiana
Ohio

Spanish speaking states:
California
Nevada
Utah
Colorado
Arizona
New Mexico
Texas

French speaking states
Louisiana
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire

English speaking states:
All others that aren't mentioned

So in total:

27 English speaking states
12 German speaking states
7 Spanish speaking states
4 French speaking states

Just a idea in my head.

Where I chose what states spoke what other than English.

German

(German immigration was gigantic in the Midwest in the 19th century.)

Spanish

(Territory won during Mexican-American war, only a sliver was in Wyoming.)

French

Some states would be bilingual, like utah for example, with its large Mormon population that settled it, they would speak both english and spanish officially, but in future generations, spanish would predominate.

How did you arrive at the state line idea, for language demarcation? Michigan itself would be at least trilingual, with Polish, Dutch and Finnish, with everyone also speaking the German you have inflicted upon them against their will..

Haha, English is a Germanic based language and German is supposedly the easiest language for us to learn-sure is ugly though.

I often wonder if English sounds as ugly to non-native speakers.

It'd be like a bigger, crappier Switzerland.

I don't think German is ugly. It is under appreciated. It is fun to speak, even though I speak it badly.

My friend from Germany, a native German speaker who learned English as his third language, said that to the German ear, English has a very pleasant sound.
