What's a good major city for a shy/socially anxious person who wants to live in a big city but still have the comfort of being alone? And no suburbs, I hate suburbs.

NYC is city where one can be alone if one wants to.

I think any city would work in this case as long as you avoid social events and keep public interaction to a minimum.

Washington DC would be a good option. It has all of the big city amenities with a human scale thanks to very little high-rise construction (age old height restrictions) which by design forces the face-to-face interactions. There's also a tremendous amount of park/greenspace where one can get away as well, not to mention museums/galleries galore (most are free!) which tend to favor more introverted individuals.

I'd agree, just be among the millions of anonymous folks in NYC, You definitely don't have to talk to anyone there if you don't want to.

Although when I think social hermits, I think about places more like the mountains of Idaho or Montana, that way you're social interaction is very limited.

NYC, DC, Boston, and Seattle are all cities you're pretty much guaranteed that besides panhandlers and the occasional weird missionary, no strangers will talk to you.

HELL NO.

As a DC native with some of the same issues the OP has this is the WORST city to move to for a million reasons.
People in DC are nosey as hell and have some serious staring problems. Living in DC has made me hate people in general.

I'd recommend NYC, Philly, or Baltimore people in these cities know how to mind their own damn business, DC doesn't know how to.

Walk onto a subway car in DC = all eyes on you
Walk onto a subway car in NYC = nobody gives a damn

I agree with the other posters, NYC. As an introvert, I have always felt comfortable there, for some reason. There is something about being surrounded by so many different types people, that I feel like you can be accepted for whoever you are there, you don't have to conform to America's social expectations that you be outgoing and friendly.

Ok, despite some obvious deep-seated issues that's not the case for most people living there as I and most of my friends living there would attest. Your case in point about NYC subways is a miss as well in the post 9/11 world.
