How does one start over in another city without a ton of money in the bank?

Obviously housing is going to be your greatest expense so the least expensive way to go about it is to find an apartment or house to share. Craigslist or independent weekly newspapers tend to be the best for finding ads. In NYC for example (the most expensive rental market in the country) one can find decent apartments to share for $700-$800 a month, with a deposit equal to one month's rent. Establishing an apartment alone otherwise would cost around three to four times that. The same formula would apply to other cities as well, with shares as low as $250-$300 (plus deposit) in many areas.

How much are deposits typically? I figure I'm gonna need SOME money, no question, but what's the littlest I could establish myself on? I'm unemployed and on a fixed income and it's very different for me to make any kind of money.

Date like crazy! You'll make friends with your date's friends, which will lead to more friends. Dating is also a great way to get to know a city.

Typically one month's rent. It would probably help to look to cities with a low unemployment rate and low cost of living if you're trying to move on to a place where you can make a living. Below are attachments for unemployment rates and least expensive cities for rent.

Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas
(anywhere below 6% should provide decent job accessibility)

Not a bad idea.
People love to show off their hometown to newbies. I know I do.

Live frugally until you have a ton of money.

I don't know where Dawn got the idea you are dating, but if you are, look for cheap dates, even if they are just barely pretty.

If you are going to post amorphous questions like this, you will get more relevant answers if you reveal your approximate gender and age, and in what way you mean "established". And what you mean by "city".
