Basically, the inner city areas. There are some areas south of James river that has lofts and is dotted with historic houses.

Plus there are so many historical and current ties that VA has with MD.
Richmond could also pass as Upper South or even "Old South," it's not entirely Mid-Atlantic. The tobacco heritage, for one. Durham and Winston-Salem down in NC also share this. It was the Capital of the Confederacy, as both VA and NC were Confederate states while MD remained in the Union. Just drive down Monument Avenue. Overall, I think Richmond is just more southern than the majority of MD. Some people even say Richmond is more southern than Raleigh. There are definite similarities between Richmond and DC and I won't deny similarities between Richmond and Baltimore, but you could also draw similarities with Winston-Salem or Raleigh/Durham.

Long story short, Richmond LOOKS less southern than it actually is.

Tobacco heritage? That's something that Southern MD has too. I can admit that the suburban parts of RVA may look like NC. I'll give you the Confederate stuff (only because I don't feel like going there with MD) in relation to NC. I'm sure that one could draw some similarities between RVA and VA on a whole with North Carolina buuuuttttttttt there's just more between MD & VA due to historic reasons that stands out today (DC metro, Chesapeake Bay watermen culture, old South urban architecture, etc). For me, it's mostly that Chesapeake Bay culture that is huge for both MD and VA.

I won't deny that, but there are many similarities between NC and VA at the same time. Areas south of the James River are especially more like NC, towns like Petersburg, Farmville, Lynchburg, South Hill, Danville, etc. The Chesapeake Bay culture may be huge but you can actually taste that flavor in some NC areas like the Outer Banks or Elizabeth City. Both NC and VA are solidly Upper South, while I think it's safe to say MD is undeniably Mid-Atlantic. MD doesn't have all the Southern Baptists that you can find in VA and NC, just look at figures like Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham. Historically, you can still draw many connections. Just look at the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island and then Jamestown a few years later. In fact, Roanoke Island WAS Virginia at the time. There are also similarities between UVA and UNC, and so on and so on.

As an actual Virginian, I can definitely say that we have a lot more in common with NC than we do with Maryland.

Virginia culturally and linguistically and politically has more similarities to North Carolina although Southern Maryland is virtually no different from Virginia. Northern Virginia has more similarities to Maryland and the rest of the Northeast than to the rest of Virginia.

Even Maryland and North Carolina have plenty of similarities.

That I have to disagree with. The majority of Maryland is nothing like NC.

I don't see too many similarities between MD and NC, either. Only southern MD and portions of the Eastern Shore are a bit like Eastern NC, and maybe some of the suburban areas of MD are a bit like Raleigh/Durham suburbia (Cary, southern Durham) but that's about it. NC is just far, far more southern. Especially when I'm in Baltimore or areas closer to PA, MD doesn't feel southern at all.

Funny, I have a friend from Silver Spring, MD who said downtown Durham, NC reminded him of College Park, MD. Can't remember why, though.

I wouldn't go that far. There are more than a few similarities, but of course more differences.
