whoops "Pennsylvanian Dutch" is the ethnic group not the language. That doesn't mean of course, they're of Dutch descent, but "Pennsylvanian Dutch" is the correct term for the group regardless.

Also I believe the PA Dutch really comes from PA Duetsche

yes is absolutely a greman derivative - but still referred to as PA Dutch

When they immigrated, they said they were Deutsch, so the idiot lady at the horse & buggy DMV marked them down as 'Dutch.' Or something along those lines.

Some people speak Dutch like in Holmes county, OH:

20.1 % Pennsylvania German
15.8 % German
7.1 % Dutch

Not surprised that it's Italian in New Jersey. Not for too much longer though, I'd bet.

I was surprised, though, that it's also Italian in PA. I thought there were more Germans and Irish in PA.

I'm actually surprised that Massachusetts & Rhode Island didn't have Portuguese as their second languages.

Me too. Suspect it's changed in the last decade. Also Western Massachustts has few Portuguese speakers (except for Ludlow). Living in Eastern MA would give a different impression.
